Westlife 'flying without wings'
01- A bright light slowly fades away, pan up to a close up shot of a young girl
03- A bright light like an explosion goes down a long tunnel on a dolly-cam
04- we can see the five figures of westlife at the end of the tunnel in a long, wide shot.
06- The light creeps away from the boys until it reaches the camera and has lit up the tunnel, with a still frame, wide, long shot.
07- The camera pans up to a close up of blacked out figure
09- Flashes accompany dismemebred close up shots of the groups' bodies
011- Quick cuts used by flahses of bright spotlights zoom out from a close up of the group to a long shot
016- The camera remains still as the group walk towards it and more dismembered close up shots are used on the boys
021- The boys are wearing similar clothing and are all in just black, some are wearing revealing clothes and they are walking simultaneously in a long, wide shot of them all
026- The camera goes to a close up of one members face then flahses to a close up of the girl to show a relationship and back to a mid-shot of another memeber.
028- The camera cuts back to a mid-shot of the boys walking towards a steadi-cam using hand gestures whilst singing, un-naturally bright light puts the background out of focus while the boys are in focus.
The camera time is dispatched equally between all the memebers with close ups of each group member and long, wide shots so all boys are on camera at once. The camera shots and editing are slow to symbolise the ballad that they are performing.

Product analysis 2

Britney Spears 'My prerogative' 2004
It is mostly narrative based with some performance.
The video is meta-narrative, the lyrics describing her own feelings.
The opening sequence has quick edgy cuts that go to the beat of the music. The lighting is very dark and the shots are very dismembered.
She is extremley objectified as she sits on the car in very seductive positions soaking wet and she uses femine touch alot which is one of her star motifs. The close ups of her face allow her to sing directly to the audience.
She looks up at the high angle shots in a sultry fashion touching her body along with dismembered shots of her body.
Her clothing and makeup is very dark like the lighting which connotates vampism and femme fatal characters.
She suggestivly touches herself and others.
The imagery is very sexual and she dances whilst watching herself on a projector going back to the idea of looking.
She is the center of attention but this appears to be because of her lack of clothing and this objectifies her greatly. People seem to be surrounding her doing things for her.
She is very plastic with platinum blonde hair her fake breasts on show and her flawless makeup. There are lots of close ups of her glossy lips as she sings.
Scenes flash from one to the other showing her different personas, she is lying in a bed at certain points crawling along (ritualisation of subordination).
She looks very confidently and seductivley at the camera as if seducing the camera and dancing for the audience in her underwear, this relates to her lyrics 'without all of the things people say' it is like she is rebelling in the video saying 'i'll act how i want to'.
During the club scene she is surrounded by people to make her look popular and desirable which is a star motif she has.
As she talks about 'why can't I live my life' there is a marriage scene between her and her boyfriend Kevin Federline which was a major speculation in the media at the time.

N-Sync 'Tearing up my heart' (1998)

This video is both performance and narrative based.

All of the memebers are wearing extremley similar clothing, their costumes are all matching in colour which is a very typical motif of a boyband.
Their image is also similar, same hair style and body.
There are alot of high angle shots some of the members are lying on the floor with a birdseye view shot making them look inferior to the audience like they are below their female audience and as though he is in pain becuase this woman is 'tearing up' his heart. This also emphasizes the 'love sick' narrative of the music.
They're are lots of meat shots of each band memeber and they all use similar hand gestures which relate to the lyrics like on 'i feel it too' they clutch their chests. They have a choreographed dance routine and they are in perfect time with one another which is a theme in their videos.
They are represented as fun loving lads who are very tight with each other, leaning on them like best friends. Spotlights are used alot, aswell as big empty spaces like unused car parks, it has no natural light it is fake and very Hollywood. This is another boyband motif and typical of N-Sync's style.
They each have equal close ups of their faces with a 'puppy dog' expression whilst singing about 'no matter what' they do they feel love sick.
The colouring in particular scenes is quite washed out like black and white which gives a nostalgic and romantisized feel.
In the opening sequence there are flashes of light on the faces of the band, this gives the idea of a modern up to date boyband along with an edgy look.
There are lots of quick cuts to different locations where the group are performing the very same routine.

Product Analysis

Westlife - You Raise Me Up (2005)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OKhMSauxD4

Westlife are one of the biggest boy bands around, they have had numerous number one hits. Westlife are an Irish pop group that formed in July 1998. They were signed by Simon Cowell and managed by Louis Walsh. In recent years, Westlife's sounds has changed from a boy band "teen pop" into a more adult contempary music.

  • The whole film is shot in black and white. This is done to give the video a dark, mellow and souly feel. The washed out black and white colour gives the video alot more feel and turns the whole turn down.
  • The video uses alot of meat cuts on the group and mid range shots of the familys and couples in the video.
  • At the start of the video the camera is focused on a single band member with the others in the background but blurred and slowly through the video they are revealed.
  • The use of the piano gives the song a soft, sexy, elegant tone.
  • The video uses alot of fades fromthe band members to actors in the video and to show relationships between the groups.
  • The video is narrative based, and the lyrics have no relationship to the location/setting of the video.

N-sync - Girlfriend (2002)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZBQwHd_1Vo

N-sync were a very popular boy band, selling millions of record and had a lot of top ten singles. The group is has now split but solo artists have formed out of the group the most well known being Justin Timberlake.

  • The whole video is set out doors, the group is shot as if they are leading a normal evening, this relatees to the lryics and how the song is about and every day situation that we can all relate to.
  • The use of the fire and flames is to represent love and passion. It also has vampish connoations. The cars are also used for the sexy and vamp side of things.
  • Lots of close ups especially at start when the wrods being said are very soft, the close up is on the lips, to show passion and the sensitive side of the group.
  • There are some shots which show a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics, the main chorus the word 'girlfriend' is always said when one group member is in a romantic situation with one of the girls in the video. (Goodwin)
  • There is alot of voyeuristic treatments of the female body. We are shown this the women wearing tight clothing and dancing in a very sexual nature, griding one an other and also the group members. The sexualised 'gaze' is encouraged throught the mise-en-scene (the location, costume and lighting).
  • The vidoe contains alot of meat shots, this may be down to the demands of the record label, the artists naby develop motifs which recur across their work. (Goodwin)
  • Use of sun light in shots to give a blurred effect for the background so that the audiences attention is focused on the star in the foreground.
  • The connotations of the cheographed routine are juxtasposed with lyrics suggesting the groups masculinity and senitivity, with the mix of masculine dance moves which are stiff and straight, against the slow movements when dancing with the 'girlfriend'.

N sync- Drive myself crazy

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TzTEsS7Qzq8&feature=related

0:00- Slow motion of a woman walking towards the camera. She has a quizzical look upon her face. The woman is attractive and is wearing lab clothes. This I believe is for the male audience as she is a sexual character.
0:06- The camera zooms in on a window. in the window are the boyband, position so they can all be seen, some sitting, some standing. The mise-en-scene (in the window) is a padded cell. This is an example of voyeurism.
0:12- A second shot of the woman, this time outside the window of the cell looking in. The camera zooms out.
0:17- A member of the band looks into the camera (at the woman)
0:18- The camera moves around and towards a differnet member sitting/lounging on the floor. The blank, blue background allows us to focus entirely on the singer.
0:21- Cut to MS, member looking downcast and sad.
0:23-Low angle moving across grass, sideways as a man walks off away from it. (diff location-start of narrative).
0:25- Pan across past tree to follow man (now recognised as member that was singing previously in cell). He grets a woman, sits down to join her at what seems to be a picnic. Enigma- is she his girlfriend? the reason he is sad?
0:26- Member in cell again in the corner looking distant.
0:28- New location in a room (connected to padded cell- may be a hospital ward). Member singing, sat on bed.
0:30- Dissolve to group in cell.

I think the video is creating a narrative that they have been heartbroken and perhaps they are in padded cell to communicate that lack of love has drove them mad. The atmosphere in the cell is dismal. A blueish tint is used that we associate with sadness and coldness. When we see shots with the woman there is a high contrast and many bright colours are shown. The sun is shining and the members are smiling. The juxtaposition of shots go with the narrative; this video is purely narrative based.

Britney Spears-Lucky

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LRlw9jqyZ4c&feature=user

This video is Britney singing about a sad, female star, which is also Britney. This is a strong meta-narrative.
  • The video begins with Britney inviting us to listen- this grabs our attention.
  • The second shot zooms in on Britney's face singing. This is a meat shot that allows us to 'see' the voice.
  • The visuals have much connection to the lyrics (goodwin). For example Britney sings 'early morning she wakes up' we are taken to 'Star' Britney rising from her bed.
  • The are huge amounts of voyeurism in this video. We are invited to look at Britney, Britney looks at herself (her second persona, the 'star') and the 'star' examines herself in the mirror.
  • There are also aspects of performance as we see Britney singing in a seperate location from her 'story'.
  • The voyeurism is excentuated when there are several identical Britney's all watching the 'star' Britney in a concerned way. This almost communicates that Britney is worried about herself and her situation. seconds later the 'star' britney looks at herself in TWO mirrors.
  • The mise-en-scene is lavish. There are rich colours and luxury items such as big beds, loungers, flowers. It promotes the idea that money doesnt buy you happiness as this young star is obviously unhappy (she later is shot crying).
  • The 'star' is at an awards ceremony. There are flashing cameras many people. This creates confusion and allows us to identify with the real Britney's life.
  • The video ends with a mixture of shots between the 'star' crying, make-up smudged and Britney singing and touching her face. The connection is definetly emphasised and made more dramatic.

Take that- Back for good

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wMSUnEOPY5I&feature=related

I feel this is a typical and somewhat iconic boyband music video. Made by one of the most successful boybands it has strong conventions.

  • The whole video is in black and white, giving it a romanticized look and adding drama and sadness.
  • There are alot of slow motion shots, when the boys are running from the rain, allowing us to focus on the characters; and establish which band we are listening to.
  • The beginning shots are out of focus and create a slow pace, appropriate to the 'love sick' narrative.
  • We see a number of CU; of each member of the band, in order to please each fan club. There are slightly more of the 'lead' singer, Gary Barlow, including some meat shots.
  • The boys are dresses similarly in heavy, winter coats.
  • Pans are used, around the band sitting (arranged) at different levels under a shelter.
  • There is a choreographed look about the movements and interactions.
  • We see brief performance shots of one member playing the guitar. This I feel is an attempt to add authenticity, saying the boys are not just pretty faces.
  • Although there is no typical dance routine in this video there are examples of dancing. A seemingly improvised sequence by each member.
  • The boys are positioned in order for us to believe they are best friends, a real group.
  • As the video progresses there are shots of the boys wet from the rain and at times they are unclothed, allowing us to view them voyeuristically.

This is a narrative based video. It could be viewed as a mix of illustrative and amplification. The boys look sad and desperate as the lyrics suggest, however there is no woman/love object or a series of events that explain the lyrics to us. The lyrics also pose no relevance to the setting/location of the video. The video is typically boyband. There are many slow-motion shots and handicam throughout, which give us the impression of control. The boys have obviously been choreographed and the production planned.

'How video didn't kill the radio star'

During the 1950s Rock and Roll films such as 'Rock around the clock' introduced audiences to the idea of 'band performances'.

Music videos were formally introduced in the late 1960s when record companies payed big name stars to make a short film for their new singles. When bands did not perform on TV becuase promotins took them elsewhere their record sales were affected, so making these short films were a fall back.

Music videos as postmodern: videos subvert more of their own conventions than they ahere to. they embrace many genres; documentry, animation aswell as abstract. They also borrow and rework other texts knowingly and ironically with a self-conscious wit, e.g. 'Madonna's Material' girl mimics Marilyn Monroes performance of 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' in 'Gentle men prefer blondes'.

Music videos like Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' purposley subvert conventions of pop however they are done in a Hollywood style cinematography and lack in the charm more low-fi productions bring.

At the beginning of the 90s the authenticity of the 80s music videos was dropped and more abstarct and simple filmaking took its place. For exampl Garbage's 'Stupid girl' (1996) was made ij only 4 hours.

Claims have been made that due to the freedom in music video making it is now an 'Auteurs medium', directors such as Jonus Ackerland have a unique style.

Artists like Missy Eliot that have a representation of excess and having some of the most expensive music videos made which have the 'i'm worth it' narrative says people from the ghetto can over indulge.

Digital technology, broadband, mobiles ect all change the way audiences consume music videos, MTV being the most significant in the evolution of music videos.

MTV- 'Music Television'

MTV was first launched in 1981, over tewnty years ago. The company adopted a narrowcasting approach as it saw a niche market in white, middle-class youth in America. Alot of MTV's output was adult orientated rock and was male orientated. Major changes came to the channel when it was brought by Viacom; viacom broadened its appeal and market by adding programmes like 'Yo!', 'MTV Rap' and 120 minute indie show. Once owned by Viacom the channel branched out into 9 MTV sub channels, making it the main tv brand associated with music videos.
Although when MTV was first launched there wasn't many music videos it still had huge impact. It contributed to the new romantics movement, involving men in make-up and such items as frilly shirts and dangly earrings.
MTV can be considered as an example of postmodernism. The channel constantly shows fragmented images. They flow, blurring boundries between videos and television adverts. With more and more celebrities endorsing commercial products these boundries are continually broken down. The structure of adverts is becoming more and more 'pop' influenced with an often upbeat soundtrack and high fashion they are very similar the the work of music artists. Some may argue that the entire material promotes consumerism and a shallow out look on life.
Another hugely successful collection of music channels is EMAP. EMAP owns several major music channels and it is obvious that they have taken influence from their predecessor. The continuous streaming of videos and little use of presentors means more profit and less outgoings. Companies like MTV work to gain sponsorship now fro individual programmes in order to pay for them.

Theorist- Niami Klein
  • MTV's global reach means that its ideology and values reach the world and spread western culture.
  • It is a marketting machine that just acts to promote products constantly.
  • It can be argued that is manipulates the teen audience?

Audience Consumption

Companies use many methods to find out information on how audiences consume music channels. They use desk research, qualitative focus groups, qualitative surveys, in-home interviews and video diaries. These companies have identified two different types of consumption , active and passive. Through these two types of consumption companies have looked into the ways which they use the programing. One type is focused viewing, this is when the audience are attentive, they creat deeper relationships and feel rewarded by watching it. The second type is ambient viewing. Ambient audiences are oassive audiences, they may use the channels for music when theya re getting ready to go out or when they have friends round and it ios used as background music.
